UNMAS Factsheet (January - March 2026)

UNMAS Sudan Factsheet for Q1 2026 provides an overview of key achievements and operational progress during the first quarter of the year.

Since April 2023, UNMAS has:

• Released 2,818,890 m2 of land back for safe use
• Removed 18,768 explosive ordnance (EO) items
• Reached 295,809 people with life-saving Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE)
• Briefed 2,625 aid workers with EO awareness

As millions of people return to their places of origin, many are increasingly exposed to the dangers of explosive hazards. New minefields have been identified in central Khartoum, including at a bridge rehabilitation site across the Nile linking Omdurman and Bahri. From January to March 2026, 77 victims (25 killed, 52 injured, including 35 children) have been reported (the actual number is expected to be much higher due to underreporting).

In response, UNMAS in coordination with the National Mine Action Center (NMAC) and partners, is implementing a comprehensive mine action response. This includes surveying and clearing hazardous areas, raising awareness to prevent accidents, and enabling safe access for humanitarian assistance and early recovery efforts.
